Small Project Turned into Comprehensive Renovation Project
What began as a straightforward basement upgrade for the Cambridge Home turned into a comprehensive renovation project, transforming not just the basement but the entire property. The initial goal was to create a new space for the homeowner, but as work progressed, it became clear that a deeper dive into the house’s structure was necessary.
Upon opening up the basement, it was evident that several issues were present. The discovery of 17 foundation cracks prompted collaboration with a Crack Specialist to address and repair each one. The electrical work was also found to be problematic, requiring extensive corrections.
With the structural and electrical issues addressed, the focus shifted to designing a functional and appealing basement. Partnering with a skilled designer, Russo Home Renovations created a layout that included a stylish bar area, a high-quality theatre setup provided by Natural Sound, and a playful under-the-stairs Nerf gun armory for the kids.
The existing furnace and heating systems were updated before purchase, ensuring they were in good shape for future use. The electrical panel was upgraded to accommodate potential future updates, and a new sump pit with a backup battery system was installed to handle the area’s high-water levels and prevent further foundation issues.
The basement was completed with new framing, insulation, drywall, flooring, fixtures, and millwork, resulting in a fantastic entertaining space for friends and family.
Moving on to an Exterior Makeover
Impressed with the basement renovation, the homeowner decided to extend the project to the entire property. Collaborating with David Smalls Designs, Russo Home Renovations embarked on a full exterior makeover. The garage doors were replaced with a single large door, windows were updated with new units from Golden Windows, and structural changes were made to accommodate new window openings.
The old brick facade was replaced with a striking combination of aluminum siding and stonework, giving the home a grand and modern appearance. A new roof was installed to match the updated exterior.
Enhancements to the outdoor living areas included adding wooden beam framing to the front porch and creating an extensive backyard area with a new roof covering, built-in BBQ, and fireplace. The existing pool was upgraded with a new liner and mechanicals, housed in a brand-new pool house with a pergola for shaded seating.
Ghent Landscaping designed the new landscaping, featuring a beautiful selection of trees, plants, lighting, and hardstone pathways, resulting in a stunning and cohesive outdoor space.
The renovation was completed during the challenging supply chain disruptions caused by COVID-19. Despite these difficulties, Russo Home Renovations and the homeowner worked closely to ensure timely decisions and project completion with only minor delays.
The project is ongoing, with Russo Home Renovations continuing to enhance the home’s interior with a new kitchen, flooring, and accent pieces.
